There are several best practices listed below that you can use to gauge the legitimacy of a vacation rental owner or manager and their property. Visit our Security Center for more information about renting with security.
Read the property reviews
Our review system enables visitors to provide a 1-5 star rating of a property (1 being the lowest rating, 5 the highest) after their stay and leave comments for future travelers. Owners/managers cannot hide negative reviews on their listings or opt out of the reviews system. The number of stars in a rating gives travelers an idea of the property itself as well as the traveler's stay. Owners/managers can post one response to each review, providing additional opportunity for travelers to get a feel for the owner/manager.
Give the owner/manager a call
Prior to submitting payment to an owner or property manager, call the telephone number posted on the listing and speak with them directly. Some owner and managers elect to show their phone number only to travelers who have inquired about availability. If you don’t see a phone number after you’ve inquired, call Customer Support for assistance at (512) 782-0805 or (877) 228-3145. Customer Support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Speak with previous visitors
Ask the owner/manager for email addresses or phone number of past guests who have agreed to be references, and contact them to ask about the property and their stay.
